Tonight’s ‘Fringe’ Packs a Plot Twist

Believe it or not, there’s more hype for the ending of Fringe’s second season premiere than there was for the ending of the show’s first season. Why is that? Why, because of a plot twist, of course — and a big one at that!
While the ending reveal for season one’s final episode, “There’s More Than One of Everything,” featured Olivia meeting William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) in the still-standing World Trade Center of a parallel universe, the ending of season two’s first episode, “A New Day in the Old Town” is being hyped even more than that. “You want to stay tuned until the very end of the episode,” Amy Amatangelo of the Boston Herald advises. “There’s a shocking reveal in the final seconds.”
“There’s a great final twist that more than compensates, and it solidifies the overall impression that a series that was once too far on the conspiracy fringe has settled into an enjoyable weekly sci-fi adventure,” USA Today’s Robert Biano claims.
But despite all my Googling, I can barely find one detail about what exactly the plot twist is. And maybe that’s what is contributing to the hype more than anything — the secrecy. In the age of spoilers, it’s really hard for anything to remain a secret in the world of serial television, but FOX has managed to pull this off. Plenty is known about the rest of the episode, but those final few seconds remain a mystery. In fact, all that’s really known is that it has something to do with actor Kirk Acevedo’s alleged “firing,” which he announced on Facebook earlier this year. But even that little bit of info gives nothing away. And that’s what makes it so intriguing — you can’t find the ending of the show with just a click — you’re going to have to watch the episode.
So what do you think? Will “A New Day in the Old Town” be worth all the hype? I certainly think so.
Fringe’s second season will kick off tonight at 9/8c on FOX. Head on back here a few hours after the episode to read a deconstruction of those final moments.
